Leg vice: It is used for heavy work and very commonly used by the black smith for holding the object during hammering.
Hand vice: It is used for holding small objects for filing and clamping materials during certain works such as holding britannia joints and western union joints.
Pin vice: It is a type of small vice. Its jaw is similar to drill chuck. It is used for holding pin etc. by the watch makers and is also used in the instrument section. The size of the vice varies according to the job.
Soldering Iron: It is used for soldering the wires in electrical circuits and small joints with the help of solder and flux. These are available in different wattage such as 25w, 40w, 65w and 125w/230-250v.
There are two types of soldering iron:
(a) Ordinary soldering iron
(b) Electric soldering iron
Rawl Plug Tool: The tool has two parts one tool is bit and other tool holder. The bit is made of carbon steel and available in different numbers according to the size of the plugs used. It is used for making holes in bricks and concrete walls. Fibre plugs or pvc plugs are inserted in them to fix the wooden batten or casing capping for fixing it.screws are driven in the plugs which cause the plug to expand and grip the wall. While using the tool it should be rotated slowly after hammering. The bit is available according to numbers such as 8, 10, 12 and 14 numbers.
Stock and Die Set: Stock is provided to keep dies in it and is made of cast iron. Die is made of carbon steel which makes threads on the conduit pipe. Generally size is referred by diameter of the jaws, such as 12 mm, 19 mm, 25 mm, 32 mm, 38 mm and 50 mm. Handles are provided on both sides of the stock for its proper functioning.
Scissors: It is used for cutting empire cloth, leatheroid paper etc. Its size varies from 150 mm to 200 mm. It has two cutting blades on one end and handles on the other side.
Cutter: These are mainly of two types:
(a) Tin cutter: It is used for cutting the tin sheets or iron, brass and copper. It is also Scissors known as snip. Its size varies from 150 mm to 250 mm.
(b) Wire cutter: It is used for cutting the soft wires or conductors. Its length is usually 150 mm or 200 mm.
Double Ended Open Spanner Set: It has open ends on both of its side, that is why it is called a double ended open spanner. It is used for loosening and tightening nuts and bolts. They are available in many sizes and shapes. A set of spanner consists of six pieces and available in different sizes, such as 10-11 mm, 12-13 mm, 14-15 mm, 16-17 mm, 18-19 mm, 20-22 mm.
Note: Single ended spanner set has open end on one side and is used for loosening and tightening the nut of one size.
Steel Foot Rule: It is made of hard and tempered steel. It is used for measuring dimensions. Its length is usually 150 mm and 300 mm.
Pincer: It is made of steel. It has two round shaped jaws. Its one leg has flat end which is used to extract nails from the wood. Its size depends on its length which varies from 100 mm to 200 mm.
Centre Punch: It is made of steel. It is used for marking on the metal before drilling. The size of a centre punch depends on diameter and length, such as 6 mm x 100 mm.
30. Mallet: It is a wooden or rubber hammer. It is used for straightening the iron sheet and copper or G.I. wires. It is also used for giving the proper shape in stator winding. Its size is taken according to the dia of its face or weight. For example, 50 mm x 150 mm or 500 gm.
Wrench: It is used to hold, tightening or opening the round articles like cor. iuit pipes, etc. These are available in different sizes 200 mm, 250 mm, 300 mm, etc. It is also known as adjustable wrench. These are of the following types:
(i) Screw Wrench
(ii) Monkey Wrench (iv) Chain Wrench
(iii) Pipe Wrench
(i) Screw wrench: It is an adjustable wrench which has an adjustable jaw sliding over the fixed jaw. It has jaws at 15 or 45° angle. The moveable jaw is threaded which touches the worm when moved. The moveable jaw moves to and fro when the worm is rotated.
(ii) Monkey wrench: Its jaw is moveable which makes it adjustable to various sizes of nuts. The monkey wrench is another type of adjustable wrench through which the heavy type of nuts are tightened.
(iii) Pipe wrench: It is made up of carbon steel and is divided into four
parts:
(a) Body,
(b) Fix Jaw,
(c) Moveable Jaw,
(d) Slider Nut.
Two leaf springs are connected to the body which provides proper hold to the teeth in the jaws. The slider nut is knurlted which can be rotated so that wrench can be adjusted according to the size of pipe or rod. It is available
Micrometer: It is a precision type instrument and is used to measure the diameter of the wire or the thickness of an object upto the accuracy of "0.01 mm or 0.001". The size of a micrometer is 0-25 mm or above. It is in a "U" shape. There are three types of micrometers.
(A) Outside micrometer
(B) Inside micrometer
(C) Depth micrometer
(A) Outside micrometer: it is used for measuring or checking the outer diameter of any object. Its size is 25 mm. Its main parts are given below and also shown in the fig
(1)Frame, (2) Anvil, (3) Sleeve or barrel, (4) Spindle, (5) Thimble, (6) Ratchet stop.
(B) Inside micrometer: It is used for measuring or checking the inner diameter of any object of maximum 2 inch or 50 mm.
(C) Depth micrometer: This type of micrometer is used for measuring depth of slot, groove and hole, its range varies from 0-1 inch (0-25 mm), 1-2 inch (25-50 mm), etc.
Digital Micrometer: It is a special type of micrometer. A digital dial is connected under the locking screw on the frame of the micrometer which is known as digital counter. Digital counter displays the measurement taken by the rachet and the thimble as the digital counter is rotated to the gears through micrometer spindle which has a screw to remove the zero errors
